Ferrari California drawing

Description

This is an oil pastel drawing of a 2009 Ferrari California, on display, in front of the Starbucks Coffee location in the Preston Square office complex, at the 2009 Ottawa Ferrari Festival courtesy of Ferrari Quebec in Montreal. It's based on this photo.

I started doing the pencils for this drawing in September and did the colouring in oil pastel sporadically through October and November.

One innovation from previous oil pastel drawings is that, in addition to the usual Mungyo and Pentel and Reeves oil pastel colours that I was already using, I bought several packs of cheap Daler-Rowney Simply oil pastels from Wal-Mart. The Daler-Rowneys are a bit harder than any other oil pastels I've tried and are hard enough to sharpen with a pencil sharpener so that I could do some finer detail than what I was able to draw before in pastel.

For shading the Ferrari, I wasn't satisfied with the selection of darker reds I had, so I bought four different shades of Sennelier oil pastels, which cost $2 Canadian per stick at de Serres, but they blend together so wonderfully. I'll probably buy a handful more Sennelier colours for shading the large areas of future oil pastels, but, as long as oil pastel drawing remains a hobby for me and not a profession, I won't be able to afford doing the entire drawing in Sennelier.

I'm afraid that some of the subtleties of the Sennelier red shading isn't that apparent due to the fact that, as with my other oil pastel drawings, I drew it on a 28" by 22" sheet of white "Bristol Board" card, so it's much too large for me to scan, even in chunks. I photographed the drawing in natural light (on a cloudy morning), but the contrast between the light and dark areas is still a bit hard to discern, especially on the front hood.

This is the second Ferrari California drawing that I started based on the dozens of photos I took of that one car, but the first I've finished. I'll try and finish the other one before the end of December.

Wow! That's great! It's a shame the lighter values in the car did not show up for you. Sennelier pastels or not, you did a really good job on this. Proportions look good, the foreshortening is good...and all of your value changes are working for you on this. It's a great piece of work!
